![]() ![]() I couldn't understand why Julie was so determined to bargain for extra time so that she could finish her story when it would just prolong her suffering, and why the Germans were so keen for her to write it, because as far as I could tell it contained very little information on the British War Effort that would actually be of any use to them. It took me a very, very long time to get into the first half of the book, and there were times when I considered giving up on it completely – mainly because I struggled to follow what was going on, and was confused by all the coded abbreviations, plane jargon, jumping between different time periods, and rambling writing style. Needless to say, this makes for quite grim reading at times, and my initial feelings about the book were mixed, to say the least. While being held prisoner of war in northern France, and forced to regurgitate everything she knows about the British war effort in return for her life, Julie pours out her story, flitting between her horrific experiences in the prison and her memories of her developing friendship with Maddie. After a daring mission into German-occupied France goes disastrously wrong, the two best friends are separated, and it is at this point that the story begins. ![]() ![]() ![]() This article argues that the double engagement of audiences in the series with acts of virtual slumming and the multiplatform consumption of the Victorians, in ways that directly impinge on questions of perception and representation, is responsible for the critical success of this text as a neo-Victorian adaptation. The Crimson Petal and the White (2011, BBC Two) is one such adaptation belonging to a larger group of recent British TV series which gaze, episode after episode, at the poverty of the historical and social other. In ways that directly implicate audiences in practices of consumption, an adaptation of a neo-Victorian novel set in the late-Victorian London East End, whose main character is a prostitute, dovetails the idea of city streets as places of consumption with the neo-Victorian interest in sexploitation. ![]() ![]() When, by happenstance, he stumbled onto the truth and walked out of Herm's stores around the world having bought millions.and millions.of dollars in Birkins, he became one of eBay's most successful entrepreneurs, and a Robin Hood (of sorts) to thousands of desperate rich women.Over the next five years, Michael's bag-buying forays took him around the globe, into the lives of celebrities and poseurs, even into danger: hiring thugs to rescue a bag held for ransom and eluding Herm's watchful eye.
